Treasury Committee warns of Budget's impact on poorest

The Treasury Committee has warned of the impact the emergency Budget measures will have on the poorest sector of society.

Treasury Committee chairman Andrew Tyrie MP (pictured) said he was concerned that the poorest groups were hit harder than middle income groups by the measures.

'There is much debate about whether the Chancellor's budget measures are progressive,' he said.

'Whilst those on the lowest incomes bear less of the strain than those on the highest incomes, I am concerned that those at the bottom appear to pay proportionately more than those in the middle of the income distribution,' he added.

'The Treasury Committee will monitor developments to ensure that welfare and other spending cuts after 2012-13 will not hit poorer households disproportionately.'

Well well! Is there really anyone out there who did not know this would happen?

Not only will the poorest lose out financially but obviously their schools will not be rebuild - and depressed people who can be educated with care will end up not able to do much with their lives. What bothers me most of all - is the complete disregard for the educational advances that have been made by the upper working class lower middle class - who have gone to higher education and now have good paying jobs - and have bought houses or apartments. It looks as if these people who have works so hard to improve themselves are going to be cast on the dust heap - those that voted Tory in this group certainly will not again! - it all seems all too tragic - in the name of what I wonder -

Nottinghill economics?-

To be brutally honest, school buildings have only a marginal effect on the education of children, as anyone who has witnessed "schools" in so called Third World countries, countries which nevertheless place a high premium on education, can attest. Good teachers and enthusiatic pupils who are keen to learn matter infinitely more than the immediate surroundings.

I think the state of repair of a school has quite a large effect on the attitudes of the pupils and teachers, I doubt if the better off in society would be sending their children to some crumbling cesspit of a school. But I guess it's ok for the less well off as they really should be grateful for what they get.

I agree with Atheist, the older voters of this country knew this was coming the day after this government was formed, with or without the worlds financial crisis.

Surprise surprise. Everyone will be affected by the cuts. We are all equally deserving or undeserving.

Thank you Treasury Committee for wasting taxpayers money on telling us what we already know.

The Treasury Committee is an opportunity for grandstanding. No brains there.

Will Cameron and Osborn take note with their continous rhetoric 'we are all in this together' it appears the Treasury Committee is telling us what already know, some are in this austerity budget more than others, mainly the poorest group. I have also noted that every answer to any questions irrespective of the question the answer always goes to deficit., the lib dems who acquired power which they could never have got seem to carrying the flag more about deficit than the Tories!

It would seem that political dogma and power base seeking jockeys have won the day again. Unfortunately its always the people who have no real say who are hit the hardest . Q.When is a Tory not a Tory - A. 'when he or she is out of power ! Q. When is a Lib. Dem. not a Lib. Dem. - A. when he or she join for the Conservative bandwagon !

While Bob's point about good teachers and enthusiastic pupils is a fair one, a visit to any independent school will reveal an enviroment of a far higher quality than any state school.

"We're all in this together", oh no we're not. I won't have to pay any more income tax even though I can afford it. The interest on my buy-to-let mortgages is at a record low so I'm well in profit there, and I can manage my investments so that I don't pay more than 18% CGT. The little luxuries I buy will cost me an extra 2.5% (but not till next year) so that's no hardship. I didn't vote for the Tories. Isn't it time that those of us who can afford to pay a bit more did so, instead of making the poorest in society pay and pay again. At least some on the Treasury Select Committee can see where this is all going. I though for a few weeks there that I was the only one.

many years ago I was paying nearly 30% income tax. The local authority provided old folks homes and my grandmother wasn't worrying about having to sell her house to pay for her care in old age, I wasn't contemplating needing to send my child to private school to get an education, I didn't pay a fortune for my NHS prescription, I could get to an NHS Dentist if I wanted one.

Well, now I pay less tax, but all in all I think I and my family are much worse off! Bring back higher taxes if it will resore the services!
