The 20 postcodes most 'at risk' of burglary

The areas in the UK that see the most home insurance claims for theft or burglary, and the postcodes that are least at risk.

The 20 postcodes most 'at risk' of burglary

Homeowners in Leeds and London are most likely to make a claim on their home insurance for theft or burglary, according to new research.

Stoke Newington, in North London, was named as the worst-hit postcode in Moneysupermarket’s list of 20 burglary hotspots. For every 1,000 home insurance claims some 33.6 were for theft or burglary.

Apperley Bridge in Bradford and West Bromwich took second and third place, while LS13 – Bramley, Rodley and Swinnow – was named the most ‘at risk’ postcode in Leeds.

However, Moneysupermarket also highlights 17 areas, including postcodes in Denbighshire, Moray, Durham and Lancashire, which recorded less than one burglary claim per 1,000 enquiries.

The research is based on three million home insurance quotes between December 2010 and November 2011.

Julie Fisher, head of home insurance at Moneysupermarket, said it is vital homeowners ensure their home contents insurance is fully up to date and covers all of your belongings sufficiently.

Meanwhile, simple security steps such as installing timers on your lights, regularly checking you locks, installing security lighting and keeping valuables away from your windows will help reduce the risk of your home being targeted by thieves.

Interesting to note that 50% of post codes most at risk are in one county.....Yorkshire.

isnt it more about areas that are most likely to claim... rather than at risk!! call me cynical but I know most of those areas in Leeds!!

Wrose crops up twice in the Worst list. Better nail everything down.

It's Stoke Newington, not Stock, and Kendal with one l.

The vibrant, diverse, colourful multicultural inner city is sure keeping its end up when it comes to nicking. Whereas the boring, non-vibrating outer suburbs and countryside are undershooting their larceny quotas.

This calls for a redistributive government programme to ensure fairness and inclusivity in being a victim of crime (or an 'underprivileged' victim of 'the system' when you commit one). Let's have a Big Society with equal opportunities to steal and be stolen from.

Maybe it's partly down to local policing. To quote a local bobby in a BD postcode "we dont' pursue them (juvenile burglars/hoodlums) as we don't want to criminalise them". I give up.

Aw c'mon Leeds and Bradford have an accumulation of 150 plus in a close area and unless there is a lot of "arranged jobs" then clearly both areas are nicking from each other maybe .

Perhaps we should ask Yorkshire's Chief Constable why is it, that this high crime area is on his turf? Is this to do with soft response by his Police Force or is it that the punishment given by their local judiciary is laughable?

Cheadle is in Stockport, not Stoke on Trent. Which doesn't fill me with confidence about the reliability of the other Moneysupermarket data

There is more than one Cheadle, this particular one [ST10] is in the Stoke on trent postal area.

Just out of interest, those high burglary/claim areas/post codes, do they have a high immigrant population?

What do you call a scouser in a collar and tie?

"The defendant."

(A scouse refugee told me that one.)

Most scouse humour is made up by scousers. I suspect too that most Essex girl jokes, come from the county and a good few were made up by Essex girls.

Barnoldswick is in Yorkshire (West Riding)!!! Not Lancashire. I will go to the stake for this.

I guess most scousers steal a car and then apparently drive to Leeds or Bradford before they burglar a house!
