Citywire Selection Verdict: Harry Nimmo’s policy of ‘running his winners’ has led him to follow many a smaller company up the food chain and he now has close to two thirds of the fund in medium-sized UK firms. This is balanced with a substantial component invested in the Alternative Investment Market, and large positions in consumer services and industrials together make up almost half the portfolio. The fund has strong three and five-year figures but lagged the smaller companies index last year. Although the timing of the launch of Nimmo’s global remit at SLI ties in with this recent underperformance, it is unlikely to be a direct cause as the drift is indicative of most of our UK small cap picks. We rate this manager highly and remain confident he can deliver going forward.

I have held this fund in my portfolio for a couple of years now, and it continues to impress. Through the recent market carnage it has indeed managed to minimise the damage - something I wish certain other of my holdings had been able to match. Most of them did not.
