Premier League footballers enjoy 11% pay rise
More than two thirds of Premier League revenue now spent on wages.
Markets
Professional footballers are continuing to receive double digit wage increases despite the financial crisis threatening to engulf the game, new research has revealed.
The total wage bill for Premier League footballers increased by 11% to more than £1.8 billion in the season just ended, according to accountant Deloitte.
It was the third successive year that Premier League footballers have enjoyed a double digit increase in wages.
Interestingly, the most rapid wage inflation was seen outside of the ‘big four’ clubs – Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal – as the pressure intensified on the chasing pack to avoid relegation or qualify for European competition.
Wages also increased by 15% in the Championship - England’s second division.
The news comes amid an increasingly bitter row over the long term financial stability of some of Europe’s biggest clubs, many of whom have massive debt mountains. Europe’s lead football body, UEFA, recently called for clubs to curb their spending and ensure they spend only what they earn.

Due to current greed in the game and thelack of control by the premier league, which then escalates down the divisions, the leagues will look totally different over the next five years.
While there a few individuals players who stand out a lot of players just cannot the salaries they are earning, even taking into account that it can be a short playing time.
Time also for a redistribution of wealth in the game by the bigger clubs.

A disgraceful situation. Will there ever be a day of reckoning for the 'football industry'?? And will the supporters go on being 'mugs'??
