Morning Line: Ed Miliband - hey punk, you are red

The new (but not New) Labour leader showed off his socialist credentials yesterday but can he get it right on the economy?

Morning Line: Ed Miliband - hey punk, you are red

Even before he started his conference speech Ed Miliband showed his ability to simultaneously surprise, annoy and amuse his audience. We will have to see whether that will be a winning combination. Here in the Citywire newsroom the decision to usher in the young pretender to Vampire Weekend's 'A-Punk' caused a mix of delight and derision.

I have no idea what the song is about, but its use as a BBC football theme tune gives it a useful populist edge for a politician. Calling yourself a punk when you have stitched up your older brother and stuck two fingers up at former Cabinet colleagues over the Iraq war is not a bad move either.

As for his performance, Ed displayed some skill with the different oratory genres: from bad best man's speech at the start (jokes about train sets and squabbles with David as a boy, cheeky tributes to Jack Straw etc); to a moving account of the values inherited from Jewish parents who fled to Britain from Nazi persecution; and man of the people analysis (debating immigration is not panderng to prejudice but a recognition of the pressure on ordinary people's wages, he said).

But let's face it he's no Blair, the switch from jokes to seriousness was far from smooth. However, neither can David match Blair's ability on the soapbox and besides not being Blair, or Brown, is the whole point of Ed's attempt to project a 'new generation' anti New Labour appeal.

He can't (and perhaps doesn't really want to) escape the 'Red Ed' tag as he pressed all the buttons the left likes to see on gender equality, gay rights, Palestine and the pay gulf between cleaners and bankers.

But can he be his own man? Ed spoke about the need for Labour to have 'fiscal credibility' as he repeated his opposition to wildcat strikes and militant trade unionism and underlined his willingness to support the coalition government on some measures to slash the massive budget deficit.

The most encouraging thing about Ed's speech is not what he said but that it signalled the end of the leadership election. We can't draw a line under the saga completely until later today when David announces what seems to be his departure from front line politics. However, we can look forward to Labour concentrating on doing a proper job of an opposition party, holding the coalition to account and challenging its determination to cut further and faster than the City or the bond markets ever wanted.

Whether Ed is the right man for this job remains in doubt. But at least his attack on David Cameron for lacking a genuinely positive vision or plan for growth shows he knows where the weak spots are in the coalition. Having done in brother David it will be fascinating to see if 'punk' Ed can really take on Tory toff 'Dave'.

David Cameron speaks with conviction of fairness and is highly-principled and honest. More than a match for the punk.

I am having problems concentrating on what he says because he looks so much like Wallace. Did anyone else notice this Grommet-esque side to him?

This is great news for the country as well as he will never win for Labour. Red Ed will take them back to the seventies

Cameron will chew him up and spit him out with ease. People have long memories and one speech won't absolve Labour from leaving the country potless.

"But at least his attack on David Cameron for lacking a genuinely positive vision or plan for growth shows he knows where the weak spots are in the coalition"

This sounds like a commendation based on your own political standing. You are agreeing then that Cameron does not have a vision and plan for growth?

"Having done in brother David"

Why does Ed splash when he talks? Surely it is possible to have some kind of operation to cure this which seems to me to be quite an important impediment for a politician to overcome.

fatcat is right and wrong:

wrong that Ed is good for the country but right that Ed had made labour unelectable for all his generation.

The man and party that profess to be the guardians of the poor and fairness have condemned the underclass to the gutter giving the Libs and the Cons the licence to carry on regardless for years to come.

Condemned to the opositon, all that the New-Old labour barons can continue to do is crow loud at a time that nobody in the country has the time nor the inclination to take them seriously.

Dazed by the sunlight of power, all what the Labour grass roots want is to remain buried in opposition with freedom to wave the red flag unhinderred.

George,

Don't confuse the underclass with the working class.

The underclass are already in the gutter and Labour have only succeeded in increasing the population by their mistaken support schemes which have only served to encourage indolence etc. The other serious problem is that Labour took away the ladders which were in place to to allow the working class to realise their aspirations. Repressive measures like the minimum wage backfired and kept many working class jobs low paid, Student fees wasted on high cost student accommodation and poor degrees have distorted upward mobility and, as always, the grammar/public school educated Labour leaders have now completely wrecked the State education system so most of the working class kids don't even have the tools to make their way in the world.

The only Blairism that was right, but not delivered, was 'Education, Education,Education', Unfortunately, Cable and Willetts are not the answer so God knows where we are going to end up.

Condemming the record of his own dreadful party and all those in it including his own dear Brother is not what he should be saying. Economic Treason is a collective charge which springs to mind, olus Illegal Warfare, and down right lies to Parliament and the populace. He claims to believe in parenthood, but his personal arrangements are somewhat out of the norm. The whole thing about the Millibands makes me shudder. This one Ed The Red is definitely peculiar It leaves me aghast to watch the turncoat sychophants cheering and clapping. God help Britain if they get anywhere near power. It is still full of conmen to the gunnels.

The Labour Party has indulged itself for four months since they were kicked out with a contest of the nobodies. As with Blair, Brown, Mandelweed et al, they were all lightweights and I just hope, having picked another dud, they will quietly descend into oblivion. Our country deserves far better than anything Labour can offer

They messed up the economy by 1979, then they squandered the economic advantages hard won by the country under Thatcher when allowed back in 1979. It took them just 13 miserable years to louse it up again and leave future generations with massive bills. Every Labout government has left with unemployment higher than when they came into office

And that's not to mention betrayal to the EU and the disaster of uncontrolled immigration

How many times can a nation put its hand into the fire?

Did I read/hear it right? Ed wants to tax the Middle Classes more! I thought the Bank of England wants us to spend more in order to assist recovery. How does paying more in Tax encourage the Middle Classes to spend more?

Was it me that would get a 'D' in Economics or Ed?

I find the heading of this article offensive and that this site seems like some sycophantic shrine to the Tory party and "chinless wonder" David Cameron "yar".

If you bothered listening to David Milliband you might learn something about how to solve the deficit without decimating public services and hitting the people least able to afford the mess that your banker friends have put us in. More than the financial economics Ed Milliband represents a party that cares about people along with justice and integrity. Something I don’t think many if any Tory's understand. Well done Ed.The Lib dems are finished as a political party and I foresee Cameron being a one term wonder. Let’s hope so for the sake of every fair minded person with a conscience and a sense of decenecy in this country
