Iberia has chosen not to exercise a get-out clause on its merger with British Airways it possessed if it felt the national carrier did not have an effective plan to tackle its pension deficit.
British Airways is taking steps to pay down its £3.7 billion deficit by contributing some £330 million a year.
The decision by Iberia is the last foreseeable hurdle for the two airlines as they seek to create Europe's second-largest carrier.
British Airways was trading at 244.9p as trading opened.
